“Studying in pajamas, the economy of the country and the importance of socializing”

A concert from the group Perpetuum Jazzile, crowd of economists, socializing and a lovely evening, relaxed conversations, new acquaintances, is a short description of the 2. gathering of the members of the Alumni club of the Faculty of Economics.

One of the main organizers Dr. Monika Lapanja, the head of the Centre of Business Excellency, has shared with us that more than a thousand graduates and visitors took part in this year gathering, which took place in Križanke. This kind of response shows a strong support from the community and as every other Business school, the Faculty of Economics also needs that. She adds that the organization of this kind of event demands a lot of effort and concludes: “I think that the excellence of the Centre of Business Excellency is also in the excellence to organize business events.”

“Perpetuum Jazzile always surprises with the ability to maintain the originality of the performers, I could not say singers, because they find themselves in different rolls and at the same time to incorporate that with the roll they have in the enormous choir. Inspiring.” These were the words of the dean, prof. Dr. Dušan Mramor, who was enthusiastic by the number of visitors, because “exactly this shows support to the Faculty of Economics and helps her to achieve her goal – to be the best.”

For EF News the dean shared the memories from his student years: “That happened when I did not pass the written exam at prof. Dr. Ribnikar. The professor had a system according to which he was calling in his cabinet at the beginning the students with the best written exams and then, towards the end, the students with the worst exams. When came turn to the ones who did not pass the exam, he also called me. He looked at me and said: “Oh, this is you?” –“Yes”, I said. “It is me.” At the end he read the whole thing one more time and because it was written so differently from the others, that at first sight it looked, that I do not have a clue, I came out with the highest grade and become his assistant.”

Between the crowds we were able to notice a lot of well known faces from the Slovene business world. The Chairperson of the Board of BTC d.d. Jože Mermal said: “that we have to belong to the economic society in which we work and also to the faculty on which we studied, because we are bind up by the great memories and colleagues. We always bring up some new ideas, way of thinking on this kind of gatherings, we analyze them and that is the thing that connect us, because this is our profession and you always know that you cannot come to the end in this field.”

A part from this gathering also took mag. Marjeta Tič Vesel, from the advertising agency Pristop. She thinks that this kind of gatherings are something special, because she is one of the “bit older Alumni members” and she is enthusiastic about the fact that you can meet a lot of people here, and the atmosphere is magical.

The mayor of Ljubljana, who is at the same time a head of the Alumni club, Zoran Janković, did not hide the excitement about the event and the participation. In his speech he point out how proud we can be, because of EQUIS and AACSB accreditation, which put the Faculty of Economics by side with the best faculties in the world. After the official speech he shared with us his student memories – an exam at prof. Černe: “At that time everybody was saying how hard this exam is. I was preparing for this exam for a month, and that was for the first time. I was studding in my pajamas, at home, because I already had a child.” The mayor also remembers his student years by the socializing and his colleagues, because “that is the thing that makes us rich.”

We also met prof. Dr. Sergeja Slapničar. She memorized her student years by the association Aiesec, where they organized studying abroad and invited foreign students. Back then there were not student exchanges, as we know them today and therefore the travels were really important for the students. The prof. Dr. Vlado Dimovski has told us, that he graduate from national economy. In those times there were just five graduates from these studies. He thought that they are going to operate with the economy of the country, but now he thinks that is more important how we manage the work of the companies.

Let me conclude with the thought of the associate dean of development, prof. Dr. Maja Makovec Brenčič. She find the event exceptional, because this is what we need, if we want to succeed in the future. “Alumni is the essence of the whole activity, at the beginning we create together, and then we build together and if we do not have good “Alumnis”, we cannot become a good school, and I think that we should be proud of the things that we saw today, experienced, and of course, of the number of presents.”
