How to find relevant articles and eBooks [CEK outside the Library]

Optimising your search may take some time but will ultimately speed up your research.

In this ZOOM presentation, Jana Logar will show you how to kickstart your research using clever and advanced search techniques, briefly introduce the available databases and give you advice on how to appraise the search results.

What to expect :

1. Kickstart Your Research:

  • Summarise your question or topic
  • Identify the keywords
  • Think of alternative search words for each concept

2. Clever techniques

  • Limit the search results (date range, language, full text, peer reviewed…)
  • Source types
  • Expanders (apply the equivalent subjects, search within the full text)

3. Advanced search techniques

  • Boolean operators
  • Grouping your words (brackets, quotation marks)
  • Using symbols (asterisk, question mark)
  • Combine a number of these techniques into one search phase for specific results

4. Where should we search (relevant databases)

5. Appraise the results
