University of Ljubljana, School of Economics and Business (SEB LU) organised EMCB (Emerging Markets Conference Board) conference on 2 and 3 June 2020, which this year, due to the known situation, took place entirely online.

The head of the programme committee and co-chair of the conference was prof. dr. Barbara Čater, who together with her colleagues doc. dr. Mateja Bodlaj and asist. Mila Zečević, mag. posl. ved, did an outstanding job, as the conference had to be set up in a different, web format in a short time. Jana Pucelj also participated in the organization of the event.

The theme of the conference was Growing business in emerging markets: Challenges and drivers for success. At the event, which took place for the first time in Europe, researchers from around the world discussed current marketing issues and trends in the 13 sections offered. The conference provided opportunities for discussion, networking and co-operation between participants from developed and developing countries.

Around 30 participants listened to interesting plenary meetings prepared by renowned professors: prof. Naresh K. Malhotra, President of EMCB 2020 and prof. Marin A. Marinov, co-president of EMCB 2020, and keynote speakers prof. Jagdish N. Sheth, prof. Mercy Mpinganjiraki and prof. Charles R. “Ray” Taylor. Through their contributions, the professors offered encouraging insights into the issues and challenges of marketing in fast-growing markets (see their biographies here).

On Wednesday, 3 June 2020, a panel entitled Challenges in Marketing Research in Emerging Markets was held as part of the conference. The introductory speaker was prof. dr. Vesna Žabkar and panel moderator was prof. dr. Maja Zalaznik. Panel discussants were Ms. Janja Božič Marolt, founder and director of the Institute for Market Research and Media Mediana and the national representative of ESOMAR for Slovenia, and Mr. Janko Hočevar, founder and CEO of Aragon. In the light of the current situation due to the new coronavirus epidemic, the guests discussed in a perceptive and interesting way the challenges of the new reality and the future of marketing research in the region. Panel was recorded and the video is available here.

Next year, the conference will take place in Puebla, Mexico, from 16 to 17 March 2021. Despite the fact that this year’s EMCB conference was successfully held at the SEB LU, the organizers, lecturers and participants agreed that personal contacts and relationships cannot be replaced by online tools. Therefore, we are proud and honored that the SEB LU was entrusted with the re-organization of the conference in 2022, at the end of May or in early June. We hope to see each other live then and present the beauties of Ljubljana and Slovenia to foreign participants in addition to the quality content of the event.

Accepted papers are published in the conference proceedings (ISBN 978-961-240-357-7) and are available here. Full proceedings are available to conference participants.
