Education for sustainable development

Gro Harlem Brundtland, the Norwegian politician, finally justified a definition of sustainable development in 1987: “Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. In 2005, the United Nations Summit defined sustainability by the three “interdependent and mutually reinforcing pillars”: economic development, social development, and environmental protection.
As a third millennium society, it is important to realise the fact, that to live sustainably means the long-run survival. Everyone needs money to live, but to survive, much more: a fellow man and healthy environment.
“Rules are made not to be broken”, is one of the sustainability principles, which should also receive more attention in Slovenia. Creating economic gains at the expense of the social and natural environment attrition is the fact which is reflected in all three types of environmental crises: natural, social and economic.
We need to understand the basic principles of sustainable development education. Therefore, it is important to understand the three pillars of sustainability and how to implement sustainability in the real world. Achieving gains in the economic sphere may not dominate the values of society and nature.
Evidence of the importance of education for sustainable operation also is the fact that sustainable development—’sustainability’—is an education component of the world-renowned universities and business schools. Harvard University, University of Oxford, Copenhagen Business School, Norwegian Business School, Faculty of Economics at the University of Ljubljana and many others offer educational opportunities for taking the responsibility for actions that lead to sustainable development society or better said, “a society with values”.
