At the beginning of this year the ALUMNI club established a new cycling section. At the ALUMNI event, on 16 January, Adriana Rejc Buhovac, Associate Professor at the FELU, stated: “Within the new sports section we want to establish a team that might eventually even wear their own uniforms!” Dr. Rejc Buhovac is the founder of the ALUMNI cycling section and an active cyclist herself.
Among evening guests were top cyclists Tanja Žakelj, the European champion and overall World Cup winner 2013 in mountain biking (cross country) and Marko Baloh, a multiple world champion in road cycling and one of the best extreme road cyclists.
Mr. Baloh tried a wide range of sports and eventually chose cycling as his favourite. According to Mr. Baloh, cycling is a sport with a soul. Ms. Žakelj is a multitalented sportswoman who became active in this sport thanks to favourable circumstances and enthusiastic acquaintances. She inherited competitiveness from her father who encouraged her decision for cycling. “Cycling is a sport in which you learn how to face and overcome obstacles time and time again”, Ms. Žakelj says.
“Training without a plan is like cooking without a recipe”, is how coach Samo Rauter metaphorically described his role in Tanja’s team. According to Mr. Rauter “a perfect physical condition and top equipment need to be accompanied with the love for sport”. And it is love for this sport that has been driving Marko Baloh to continue cycling despite serious health problems. Although he got a blood clot during one race and pneumonia during another, Marko raced seven times in one of the most difficult and extreme bike races in the world, the RAAM (Race Across America). In a race like this, Marko spends on average from 700 up to 1,000 calories per hour, drinks 30 liters of liquid a day, and despite the fact that he sleeps only 3 hours per day he only fell asleep on the bike once during seven races.
Both guests agree that such outstanding achievements require both talent and hard work and that for top results you need to insist in what you are doing.
