On Wednesday, 12 February 2014 the second meeting of Italian and Slovenian business people and distinguished guests was held at the Faculty of Economics (FELU). The organizer of the meeting was the Italian-Slovenian Forum in cooperation with the Italian Embassy and the FELU. The discussions were focused on current economic and financial issues such as sluggish markets, debt and privatization as well as on the exchange of experience and comparison of challenges.

Professor Metka Tekavčič, the FELU dean, welcomed the attendees and outlined the current political and economic situation in Slovenia and Italy. Mr. Jurij Giacomelli, the president of the Italian-Slovenian Forum, stressed the importance of cooperation and pointed out that “people, above all, are the ones who make the difference”. Mrs. Rossella Franchini Sherifis, the Italian Ambassador to Slovenia, shared the view and stressed the importance of having an opportunity to exchange experience, good practices and useful suggestions, which might all help to restore economic prosperity. Mr. Mitja Mavko, the state secretary at the Ministry of Finance and professor Fabrizio Pagan, advisor of the Italian Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, both agreed that only open and transparent privatization processes could have beneficial effects on the market stability.

ITALIAN-BANKING-FORUM-2014-006Professor Ivan Ribnikar from the FELU presented his view on banks: “The banking problem is simple: it is about releasing the capital, which is a two-way flow. Capital must be imported and exported.” Professor Giacomo Vaciago from the Catholic University of Sacro Cuore in Milan expanded on the notion of two-way capital flow and lamented that “…nowadays we are trading more in factories rather than in goods”.

The meeting was concluded with the discussion which was led by Vittorio Da Rold, the international correspondent for Il Sole 24 Ore, the Italian daily newspaper. Among the distinguished guests there were also Mr. Matej Runjak, a board member of SOD, Mr. Carlo Cardini, a supervisory board member in Intesa Sanpaolo, Mr. Giancarllo Miranda, the Board Chairman in Banka Koper, Mr. Stefan Vavti from the UniCredit Bank, and professor Marko Jaklič from the FELU. All guests agreed that synergies between privatization and sustainable development were the key requirements for achieving concrete and positive changes.
