Horizon 2020 provides 77 billion EUR for Research Projects
On December 5th 2014, the Faculty of Economics, Ljubljana University (FELU), held Research Conference, which presented the European Horizon 2020 program. The programme is intended to fund research projects. Furthermore, the issues of plagiarism and copyrighting were discussed. FELU also presented two award-winning researchers for the best-published article in 2013. Six research teams, who are currently working, also presented at the event.
Prof. Vesna Žabkar, from the Research Centre, Faculty of Economics (CREF) pointed out the importance of research within the University, which is the first in the development projects in 2013, of the 13 countries that have joined the European Union since 2004. In Slovenia we have the most research projects in the field of economics and business, while Europe has the most psychological studies. Therefore, FELU is committed to multidisciplinary and international research excellence.
Slovenian researchers mostly cooperate with the US, Dutch, British, and Croats
Since 2006 we have noticed a constant increase in published research projects with an all-time record of 421 last year in 2013. This year results haven’t been calculated yet. Mag. Staška Mrak Jamnik, from Ljubljana University (UL) stated that the EU supports the Trans-European characterized projects that are bringing new added value. Under the programme Horizon 2020, EU allocates 24.4 bn. EUR for the development of science, 17 bn. for Industrial-innovation projects, and 29.7 bn. for social projects. Horizon 2020 promotes an initiative for innovation, European global competitiveness and economic growth. Professor Marko Munih from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Ljubljana University, which is carrying out the projects with the highest value, stressed that the key point in projects is the content with applicable value and composition of the consortium. “For Slovenia, I especially see the potential in a better exploitation of already internationally recognized researchers, because they have more chances of success in the allocation of new projects”.
First prize for the best article published in 2013 was received by Miroslav Verbič, PhD., second prize was won by Ljubica Kneževič Cvelbar, PhD.
Miroslav Verbič, PhD., analysed the introduction of dual pricing in museums in the case of Iran, together with Iranian and Chinese colleagues. Ljubica Kneževič Cvelbar, PhD., received the award for the analysis of long-term strategic planning in Slovenian hotels, in cooperation with her American counterpart.
The conference also pointed out that the most crucial research filed was the international cooperation and participation on international research seminars, where researchers from all around the world meet and established new partnerships. That lead to new discoveries and further bilateral cooperation.
On the second part of the Conference we listened to six currently active research teams that are all studying various topics in the field of economics and business
Plagiarism and copyright harms everyone and Slovenian authorities do not do enough
Martin Brush, PhD., vice-chancellor of the UL, pointed out that during the previous week the adopted Code for Researchers at the UL. General Code of Ethics had already been adopted in 2009. Maja Bogataj Jančič, PhD., from the Institute for Intellectual Property stressed that these measures are insufficient, since they do not specify offenses and consequent sanctions. Her message was that media cases of recent years, finally led to a much-needed public debate on the subject. She finished by exposing the necessity for improvement of the situation, because plagiarism is harmful for all researchers and Slovenia’s reputation abroad. She hopes that things will start to improve, especially with more active roles by the universities in Slovenia.
