Chinese days at II. High school Maribor
Between 26th January and 10th February Chinese days were held at High school Maribor. In the context of these days they organized two workshops for their students and visitors – workshops: Chinese cuisine and Chinese calligraphy. Visitors could also saw a movie called “lp man“. The participant of cooking workshop prepared Chinese dumplings called “jiaozi“, dish, that is in China for centuries-long tradition eaten on the last day of the old year. Dumplings have symbolic value because their shape is similar to the shape of money and the Chinese belief that this brings wealth in the new year. At the calligraphy workshop participant got to know the four treasures of scholar room: brush, ink, paper and ink stone. And then they had the opportunity to learn something about the history of the development of different calligraphic styles and about the connection with the natural rhythms of nature, which is in Chinese Tradition expressed with a holistic concept of dao. Each participant painted bamboo, a popular Chinese calligraphy motif that symbolizes longevity and they also wrote a Chinese character “fu” on a red paper, “fu” means “happines“, and Chinese put this character on the doors and windows of their homes.
Chinese days started with the opening of the exhibition of Chinese calligraphy and poetry. The exhibition was composed of two thematic collections: collection of calligraphic images of two famous Chinese painters and a collection of poems by Chinese poets who have in China earned immortal glory. On the last day of Chinese Days was the celebration of Chinese New Year. At the celebration students from II. High school Maribor, students from High school Ptuj and children from kindergarten Tezno preformed and showed their skills in Chinese language.
At the event, we saw a variety of Chinese dances and hear some Chinese songs, traditional Chinese instrument “hulusi“, a Chinese story and dramatization of Chinese songs. Students and children were for the performances prepared under the guidance of Chinese teachers Jasmine (Cao Yaqi) and Tracy (Wang Xiao) and sinologist Mojca Seljak.
