Centre of Excellence in Finance: Attracting talents to an international environment
The career centre of the Faculty of Economics (CERŠ – Centre for development and advising students) in cooperation with the non-profit student organisation Management Group once again organized the event “Delo MeNE išče” at the Faculty of Economics. On 15th of April 2015, as part of this twelfth consecutive event, twenty one lectures have been organized, which emphasized what learning potential employers want from their employees, how to prepare for job interviews and various important information for both finding a job in Slovenia or abroad. One of the lectures was about the leading regional development institute, the Centre of Excellence in Finance (CEF).
The project manager of CEF, Ana Frangež, and the Head of Finance, Ivana Nedižavec Korada, hosted the presentation named “Centre of Excellence in Finance: Attracting talents to an international environment”. Divided into three parts, the presentation showed students what CEF does and who they are, finishing the presentation with a workshop on facing challenges and fears while finding employment after graduation.
Established in 2001, CEF offers expert training to public sector officials and central bankers in the fields of central banking and finance, a goal supported by the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank itself. In 2015, CEF became an international organization, exapanding its activities across South East Europe and is today a leading training institutes and offers three different kinds of programs that include workshops and seminars, certification programs and tailored trainings. When asked about the benefits of attending these workshops, Ana Frangež answered that there are two things they are focused on, first being the provision of the best international practice available in a particular field of public financial management and second being peer-to-peer learning, as all of the people attending these workshops are experts in their particular field.
While talking about being employed at the CEF, the presenters put great emphasis on “soft skills”, such as a feeling for encouragement and interaction, showing students that sometimes experience, although a great atribute, is not always the most important consideration when hiring. All of the employees of CEF have been carefully chosen from numerous candidates who, as the presenters jokingly called it, went through “NASA training” and were picked based on both their knowledge and skills but also on how they fitted into the CEF team, in order to be sure that they put “the right person into the right place”. As for improving the aforementioned “soft skills”, Ana Frangež suggested attending workshops and recording yourself while you speak, while emphasizing the importance of being comfortable in your own skin.
In the last part of the presentation, the presenters asked students to write down their fears and challenges while searching for employment, anonymously. Afterwards, both students in the group and the presenters gave their best advice based on the fears and challenges that were written down, helping students by both giving them the opinion of their peers but also more experienced people who went through the same struggles . “I was really thinking through the head of me seventeen years ago and what I was lacking when I was leaving this facility.” – said Ana Frangež when asked about the benefits of students attending these sorts of workshops – “I really hope I opened their minds and gave them at least a few hints that will help them on their quest to get the correct job.”
