„A Useless Fiction” (Nekoristna fikcija), a short experimental ethnographic film by Macao visual anthropologist Cheong Kin Man will be presented at the Festival of Migrant Film. The Ljubljana première will be held on 17 June (Wed.) 9pm at the Slovenian Cinémathèque.

The presentation is sponsored by Macao’s Cultural Affairs Bureau and supported by Macao Economic and Trade Representative Office to the European Union in Brussels.

A cocktail for Slovenia-Macau cultural exchange will be served after the screening. The filmmaker will be present. The admission is free and all are welcome.

The 31-minute short film draws on scenes from the filmmaker’s daily life and the process of

filmmaking, raising several anthropological and existential questions on nature, origin, language, non-existence, identity, visual media and dominant cultures. Among many multilayered stories depicted in the film, there is a short chapter about the filmmaker’s parents who were once illegal Chinese immigrants in Macau.

The film was presented at Festival de Cannes’ Short Film Corner in France, Cinemística Film Festival in Spain, Kino Otok – Isola Cinema International Film Festival in Slovenia and will be shown at Columbia Gorge International Film Festival in the US. The film won „2015 Rising Star Award” at Canada International Film Festival and is invited by the Alliance Française de Singapour to be shown in Singapore.
