GLOBAL COMPETITION IN A MULTIPOLAR WORLD: REDISCOVERING MARCO POLO AND THE SPIRIT OF THE SILK ROAD

16 February 2016 at 5 pm at Faculty of Economics University of Ljubljana

Impressive guest lecture with professor Fernando F. Cortinas Luquez from IE Business School will provide to the participants the overview how the international trade has evolved thought the last centuries, and how countries compete today. What are the most relevant trading blocks in the global scenario, including the Pacific Alliance, and what is the role for a country like Peru in this evolving scenario?

You will have an excellent opportunity to discuss the process of the global competition in a multipolar world and how trading war is taking place among different blocks.

Framework of the lecture

The Silk Road is the oldest and most emblematic trading road in the world. Rather than a single physical road, the Silk Road was a communication network that linked Europe with the Far East, since 1,000 years before Jesus Christ.

The Silk Road´s most famous traveller is Marco Polo, who in the XIII century went from Venice to China through Asia at the age of 17, with his father and his uncle, completing the journey back after 24 years. Because of all the adventures and risks he had to face, Marco Polo is an icon that embodies the values of an entrepreneur, being a role model for young generations willing to become enterpreneurs or who have managerial responsibilities at family owned business.

Marco Polo and the Silk Road are not only a good excuse to explore entrepreneurial values at work, but also an opportunity to describe the new Economic Order and the New Silk Road that China is re-establishing in the XXI century as it emerges as a global trading power.
