From 16 to 18 May 2018, Banja Vrućica, Teslić (Bosnia and Herzegovina) was the venue for the 13th international symposium on corporate governance. The symposium was organised by the Faculty of Economics in Banja Luka (BiH) and the Association of Accountants and Auditors of the Republic of Srpska. This year’s symposium was entitled “The Digital Economy – Driver of Future Economic Growth”. Prof. Dr. Janez Prašnikar from the FELU was a member of the Organising Committee and the head of the symposium programme. Cooperation between the FELU and the Faculty of Economics in Banja Luka is underpinned by a cooperation agreement which also includes the transfer of knowledge. The organisers also published symposium proceedings, including 25 contributions of which seven were written by colleagues from the FELU.

The main sponsor of the event was the Slovenian international company Kolektor Idrija, an important strategic partner of the FELU. The company is strongly linked with the economy of the Republic of Srpska, where it operates four production facilities and will employ more than 700 people by the end of this year. Stojan Petrič, the long-standing General Manager of Kolektor and current Chairman of its Supervisory Board, who is also a member of the FELU Business Advisory Board, presented in his speech “Kolektor Idrija: from a small local company to an international corporation” the company’s development phases (including digitalisation) over the past 30 years. This was followed by a presentation of the Nokia company from its golden era through to its decline and new ascent, given by Martin Sandelin, Vice-President of Nokia in retirement, who had held this position for 30 years. Mr Sandelin is a member of the FELU International Consulting Committee.

During the round tables held after the introductory themes, a number of experts from academia and business  from the broader area presented their views. At a round table entitled “A turn towards Industry 4.0”, well-reputed  economists from the region (Prof. Dr. Ljubo Jurčić from Croatia as well as Prof. Dr. Dragan Đurišin, Prof. Dr. Miroslav Labus and Prof. Dr. Dejan Šoškić, all three from Serbia) discussed the economic aspects of Industry 4.0 relative to the economy of the Western Balkans region. The round table was led by Prof. Dr. Janez Prašnikar. The Dean of the FELU, Prof. Dr. Metka Tekavčič, participated in a round table entitled “Education system and institutional support for digital development” where she presented Slovenia’s education system and the FELU’s position in the wider area. A round table called “Cities and municipalities in the function of supporting the new industrial transformation” was attended by Prof. Dr. Vladimir Prebilič, the Mayor of the City of Kočevje and a lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Ljubljana, who presented the development of the Municipality of Kočevje.

The symposium was regarded as a success. More than 200 participants from the business, scientific and political worlds were satisfied with the freshness of the programme which touched on every participant, the Republic of Srpska and the broader Western Balkans area. The symposium created hopes that, by engaging one’s own capacities and with appropriate help from the external environment, the Western Balkans and the Republic of Srpska can boldly start joining international integrations. The local organisers assessed that the transfer of knowledge by the Slovenian organisations was vital for the symposium’s success.
