Company Visit – MAHLE Letrika d.o.o.
On Thursday, May 9th, 2019, the IMB students visited the production Company MAHLE Letrika d.o.o. in Šempeter pri Novi Gorici. The purpose of this visit was to get familiar with the activities this niche specialist for agricultural and construction machinery, commercial vehicles, material handling equipment, electric transport carts and the automotive industry is doing, especially in the area of R&D activities and strategic planning.
Dr.–Ing. Armin Messerer, Director of Division of Mechatronics, Electric Actuators and Auxiliaries at MAHLE Group, presented the company together with the opportunities and challenges they are facing locally and globally. The division operating in Slovenia is one of the biggest Slovenian exporters and employers in the region. After the initial presentation, students were able to enter the production facilities, where different employees and department heads explained certain products and processes, from production and testing to quality control and development.
The visit finished with the discussion on the strategic planning throughout the MAHLE Group, which operates in the global environment and has to coordinate all the activities and resources among all subsidiaries and divisions. Key elements in this process are thinking in scenarios to define strategic positioning, focusing on core competencies, maintaining strength, building an agile organization, and having a clear understanding of the transformation, innovations and collaboration. All of these contribute to MAHLE’s identity as “a driving force for new technologies.” During this presentation, students were able to see how certain concepts and tools, discussed in the class, are applied and used in the everyday business world. Such visits thus enable students to better understand how different pieces come together in a bigger picture inside the company on the local and global level.
