The 5th International Summer School, which took place between 3rd and 17th July 2016, was hosted by Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE). The main theme of Summer School was »The Belt and Road Initiatives«, with purpose to reaffirm China’s support and concerted efforts to promote connectivity in trade and economic development between the Asian, European and African continents. Moreover, it helps to promote investment and consumption, create job opportunities, and enhance cultural exchange.

I had an opportunity to take a part in International Summer School in Chengdu for two weeks. I found this city fast paced, crowded and full of new skyscrapers with incredibly chaotic traffic. Being in China for the first time, and as the only Student Ambassador from the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana (FELU), I had my first-time culture shock. On the other hand, Chengdu is a well-known city for famous Sichuan cuisine. It is renowned for being very spicy, oily and packed with plenty of peppercorns, and traditional Hotpot is no exception. Indeed, it helped me to lose few kilos as well.

During summer school, I had a unique opportunity to learn about Chengdu, to gain a deep understanding of the local historical, cultural, business, and economic environments of modern China. It  fulfilled my expectations by offering many opportunities to participate in every single activity to understand Chinese culture and the way of living in China. I have met extraordinary people from all over the world and I am grateful for that. In only two weeks, we have become friends, have a chance to see each other’s strengths and weaknesses, to become familiar with other cultures, to support and help each other whenever needed.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

We all love comfort. Why should we try to change our environment, perception, and our habits in order to change the way of living? It is comfortable in there, isn’t it?

I strongly believe that every student should take a part in any exchange opportunity (e.g. study abroad programs, summer school, internship). It will help you to grow as a person, meet new people from around the world, become familiar with its culture and to broaden your horizons in order to become a better person. In my opinion, the challenges I have faced changed me to into a better person.
