Are we aware of the problems of modern cities? Is there a green future? These were the main questions to which we tried to answer at the Business Informatics and Business Logistics Day 2022: About smart cities, mobility, energy and a green future, which was held on Wednesday, 30 November 2022, in the Blue Hall at the SEB LU (School of Economics and Business, University of Ljubljana).

Smart cities, mobility, energy and a green future were key topics of the Business Informatics and Business Logistics Day 2022, which combined two events into one in order to build on the considerable interconnectivity of the two research fields. “Business informatics and IT is a crucial part of the supply chain. Digitalisation is bringing completely new business models, and these fields are becoming increasingly important for companies,” said Prof. Dr. Tomaž Turk of SEB LU. Both have been study programmes at SEB LU for several decades. “The Business Informatics study programme is ranked first in the area of information systems management on the Eduniversal Business School Ranking,” continued Prof. Dr. Mojca Indihar Štemberger.

Tomaž Lanišek, MSc, Head of the Department for Development, Smart City and Projects, City of Kranj, took the audience on the path of the digital transformation journey, currently undergoing in the City of Kranj. Kranj is one of the three Slovenian cities participating in the European Commission’s Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities 2030 Mission. A total of 100 cities were chosen to be demo cities on how to become carbon neutral through digital transformation. “We are going to transform Kranj to be more green, more data friendly and smart, meaning to live better with less resources,” said Lanišek. Their pilot project “Smart mlaka” is the first step towards achieving this goal, being the pioneers rather than followers when it comes to green development.

Digitalization of mobility services at Nomago was the second topic of the day. “Sustainability is a key element of our mission and that is why we are launching the 50:1 initiative – if we fill one bus, you can expect 30 to 50 fewer cars on the road,” started Dr. Borut Puklavec, Chief Technology Officer at Nomago. To achieve this, digitalization must be one of the main strategic goals. “Five years ago, there were just multiple companies with very basic IT systems. We have integrated and built other systems around this to be able to cover most of the business functions today,” continued Dr. Puklavec, introducing their four core platforms – for travel, public and IC lines, smart cities and charter lines.

“To achieve our new mobility culture MaaS – Mobility as a Service, which is all in one, door-to-door mobility with sharing instead of owning, and developing and connecting new mobility services as platforms, we use new mobility pillars such as on-demand, shared, electric and automated mobility, to move from products to services,” concluded Andrej Hafner, Head of Information Technology at Nomago.
