On Tuesday, 21 March 2023, a presentation of doctoral studies took place at the School of Economics and Business in Ljubljana. The programme and the course of study were presented, and at the end, some PhD students described their personal experiences.
The event was opened by Prof. Dr Metka Tekavčič, Dean of the School of Economics and Business. She warmly welcomed the future PhD students to the SEB LU and expressed her hope to see them in as large a number as possible at the beginning of the next academic year. The presentation was continued by Prof. Dr Miha Škerlavaj, Vice-Dean for Research and Doctoral Studies. He shared a few words of wisdom with the students: “Doctoral studies require 1% inspiration and 99% hard work.”
The main part of the presentation was led by Prof. Dr Mateja Drnovšek. She presented the technical and administrative details of the study programme to the prospective students. She strongly emphasised the importance of choosing a mentor and cooperating with him/her in the PhD work. “The most important support during your doctoral study will still be your family, but at SEB LU your mentors will take over this role.” In addition to the traditional PhD programme, in recent years the SEB LU, in cooperation with the Bank of Slovenia, has been organising additional study tracks where students can listen to world-renowned lecturers and gain in-depth macroeconomic knowledge. Prof. Dr Drnovšek dedicated a lot of attention to the two new laboratories that opened on 22 March at the SEB LU and will also be available for future PhD students. The Finance Lab and the Behavioural Lab will anchor the SEB LU in Ljubljana as a major research institution in the field of economics in the region.
Afterwards, some current PhD students presented their experiences. Assist. Dejan Uršič, MSc in Business, introduced the future students to the Young Researchers Programme, which enables PhD students to pursue their academic career and work as assistants. After that, the PhD students Assist. Urša Ferjančič, MSc in Business, and Assist. Dr Zhonghui Ding shared their experiences and anecdotes from their PhD studies.
Next, Prof. Dr Drnovšek presented the two interdisciplinary PhD programmes offered by the University of Ljubljana. Finally, the mentors were put under the spotlight and presented themselves and their fields of expertise.
