Universities Week 2013: »PhDs (Doctors of Science) are ambassadors for the quality of individual universities at the highest scientific level.” Ivan Svetlik
As part of this year’s Week of the Universities, on Monday, December 2, in the Rectorate of the University of Ljubljana, an exhibition entitled Doctorate of science and promotion of PhDs at the University of Ljubljana from 1919 to 2012 was opened.
The exhibition was presented by Jože Ciperle with the historical development of doctoral studies in Slovenia, and Tatjana Dekleva with the explanation of the thematic divisions of the exhibition.
The Rector of the University of Ljubljana Ivan Svetlik opened the exhibition with the following words:
»PhDs are ambassadors for the quality of individual universities at the highest scientific level. The first doctorate was defended by Anka Mayer in July 15 1920. Just few universities in the world can say that their first PhD title was given to a woman. « He expressed the wish to bring closer the activities, exhibitions, promotions and festive sessions of the Week at the University to a wider range of the public, even outside the circle of the university.
Vice-Rector Maja Makovec Brenčič welcomed the guiding idea of this year’s Week of the Universities: »I think this is a great memorial to all those who have contributed so much to the development of science and consisted of a mosaic of achievements in science in various fields of humanities, engineering, natural sciences, social sciences and the arts. This is an extremely rich overview of the whole progress, but also a historical moment that will mean a lot to all subsequent generations. «
Exhibition Doctorate of science and promotion of PhDs at the University of Ljubljana from 1919 to 2012 is on display until February 2014 in the Rectorate of the University of Ljubljana, on Kongresni trg.
