On 13 March, the Faculty of Economics hosted a meeting entitled “A Meeting of the Youth and the Politics of the Future” which was organized by the Managers’ Association of Slovenia. Main topic were focused on government achievements in the economic and social fields as well as on suitable action plans for the future.
The introductory welcome speech was given by Professor Metka Tekavčič, the Dean of the FELU. The next speaker was Mrs Lousewies Van Der Laan, a Dutch politician and a vice-president of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Party, who highlighted some current economic features, namely rampant credit resulting in huge intergenerational theft, unstable pension systems and student grants. She encouraged students to become more actively involved in politics, interest groups and student exchanges. According to Mrs Van Der Laan, young people should take the future in their own hands and actively participate in elections. She also highlighted some parallels between Slovenia and the Netherlands, which are both small countries whose only way towards success seems to be their openness for investments, experience and people. Politicians Andrej Vizjak and Franc Bogovič both agree that highly–skilled labour, added value and environmental advantages will be crucial for the future of Slovenia, while Franc Stepišnik believes in core activities such as farming and tourism based on environmental sustainability.
Speakers also criticized the inefficiency of Slovenian legislation, problems of the anti-corruption commission, fast-changing governments and the lack of moral values and integrity as well as poor corporate culture. Ljudmila Novak, a former member of the European Parliament and the president of the New Slovenia – Christian People’s Party concluded the discussion by quoting a German manager, namely: »A good school will empower young people to create their own workplaces first and later take care of others”.
