IMB students attended Portorož Bussiness Conference
Prominent speakers, interesting discussions, meeting with leading Slovene companies, gala dinner and great experience. Not only about this was the 14th Portorož Business Conference, organised by Faculty of Economics Ljubljana and newspaper Finance, which took place on 22nd and 23rd November at the Grand Hotel Bernardin in Portorož. Students of the 19th generation of an IMB programme were preparing a research at Joint Research course under the mentorship of prof. dr. Janez Prašnikar and FELU professors. Their findings were presented at the conference. The main focus of the conference was the question “Searching for new opportunities or waiting for better times?” which is very relevant for current situation of global crisis.
Programme director, prof. dr. Janez Prašnikar officially opened the conference with a short welcoming speech. Afterwards, the first speaker, Gary P. Pisano, from Harvard Business School talked about a new network economy and landscape of the world economy in ten years. During the first day of the conference, we had a chance to listen to experts from the branch, Jernej Barbič (University of Southern California), Aleksander Zalaznik (Danfoss Trata), Jürgen von Hagen (University of Bonn and member of Advisory Council of the German Federal Ministry of Economics), Joachin Scheide (Institut for World Economy, Kiel) and Veljko Bole from EIPF Ljubljana. After each lecture, there was a short interactive discussion where students had a chance to ask experts.
The evening session started with Solemn award of Business Daily Finance’s award for exceptional achievement in the economy, which was this year given to Aleksander Zalaznik, General Manager of Danfoss Trata and Vice President of Business Unit Controls. Conference continued in a glamour spirit with a concert of Vlatko Stefanovski, followed by a gala dinner and night talk with Matevž Lenarčič, who flew around the world and set a world record.
On the second day of the conference we had a chance to listen to other famous experts: Giuseppe Canullo (Universita Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona), Lubomir Lizal (Member of Board of Czech National Bank), Oliver Oursin (IBM) and Janez Šušteršič (Minister of Finance of Republic of Slovenia). Also the results of Research by the Faculty of Economics and students of IMB programme in Ljubljana were presented by prof. dr. Janez Prašnikar, izr. prof. dr. Tjaša Redek, asist. dr. Daša farčnik and asist. dr. Domen Trobec. This year’s topic was ‘Company success in dealing with external shocks: Western Balkan, Club Med and Core Europe’. Last session of the conference was a round table with top managers in the region, Peter Schlamberger (Advisio), Toni Balažič (Mercator), Tibor Šimonka (SIJ, Slovenska industrija jekla), led by Peter Frankl (Business Daily Finance).
Prof. dr. Janez Prašnikar closed the conference with a wish to meet everyone next year at the 15th Business Conference in Portorož. After being a part of the conference and experiencing the research presentation, students of the IMB’s 20th generation are looking forward to participate in the conference next year and conduct a research papers that will become a valuable contribution to their academic references.
