If you are looking for an active person who knows how to engage himself in many different fields, Ferkan Kaplanseren is definitely the one. With doctorate degree in Computer Engineering, he is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Business Administration of Dokuz Eylül University in Izmir, in Turkey. Full of humour, he says that after four years participating in Ljubljana Summer School (Take The Best From East And West), he already feels like a part of local community.

1. What are your core research interests and in which fields do you use them?

My research interests encompass E-Business/E-Commerce, Management Information Systems, Systems Analysis and Design, Artificial Intelligence, Intelligent Agents and Mathematics. Besides teaching; I am also a guest professor at other Faculties around the world, like Finland, South Korea, France, Germany, Lithuania, Austria and Ireland, I also cooperate with some Turkish companies as a consultant providing advice on how to use Information technology for their business purposes. I am an IT and IS supervisor at Izmir Courthouse.

 2. What does your work at the Ljubljana Summer School encompass?

Every year professors must do more than just lecture. We alos give seminars in order to share our knowledge. Some of us started to offer new courses that will be conducted with two professors from different disciplines. Professors from different countries who work on the same project strengthen the network of Universities. I like social activities like dinners with professors, trips around Slovenia and as well asjoining student parties.

I can definitely  say that Ljubljana Summer School gives students an excellent  opportunity to obtain new information and knowledge.

3. What would you define as the most important benefits that y students get from attending the Ljubljana Summer School?

Certainly internationalization is the biggest advantage that students benefit from. Having courses from international professors is probably the second most important advantage. On the other hand, visiting such a wonderful country as Slovenia and the city of Ljubljana is as worth as much the advantages I already mentioned.

4. How would you describe standards of E-Business in Turkey? Is the system compatible and extended all over the country or mostly centralized?

Without giving any statistics I can certainly say  that government, municipalities, institutes, universities, companies, individuals etc. are strongly engaged into electronic transactions in Turkey. In the beginning, it took some time to transform the organizations into electronic ones because of the limitations and barriers like resistance to technology, IT infrastructure, legal regulations, privacy and security issues, international trade barriers and lack of compatible platforms for trading businesses. Recently, everywhere in Turkey, you can feel the electronic world being an indispensable part of life. The quality of our E-Business standards is equivalent to the quality standards used by European Union countries.

5. Artificial intelligence is spreading deeply and widely. Do you think that that there is a limit to this growth? Considering Finance, could you imagine all brokers being replaced by technology?

If we can say that there is a limit for human imagination and creativity, we can say the same for the artificial intelligence. In my opinion it is impossible. Technology is taking place over people, companies, everything. Decision Support Systems, Expert Systems and Negotiation Support Systems may easily decide on behalf of brokers. Development of Semantic Web, Web 3.0 and Web 4.0 technologies will facilitate this replacement as well.
