Guest Lecture was divided into three main parts, where guest lecturer Tine Tomažič, PhD presented (1) evolution of flying; taking us on a long journey from first flights worldwide and in Slovenia till the contemporary challenges of electric flying. We heard that in the last century flying became ordinary and time intervals of developing new aircraft are becoming shorter and shorter. Focus of the development in aircraft is on endurance, range and efficiency of planes; (2) management of Green Flight Challenge 2011 that was organized by NASA and Google where Mr Tomažič, PhD was the leader of a Pipistrel’s Taurus G4 – world’s first fully electric 4-seat aircraft – team that in October 2011 won the NASA challenge. Mr Tomažič, PhD explained concurrent development and emphasized the importance of setting clear and regular milestones in running a project of that size; and (3) lessons learned from his working experiences, among others having a flexible and durable team, the importance of knowing your competition, and thoughtful consideration of side effects for the project results.

Based on his extensive experiences in leading R&D team our guest speaker shared with us several valuable advice for project management and teamwork as well as coordination among departments within a learning organization:

  1. Design for disruptive innovation.
  2. Have a sustainable vision.
  3. Contingency planning is vital.
  4. There is no such thing as a perfect idea.
  5. Underpromise, overdeliver.

Full Professor Vlado Dimovski, PhD, Associate Professor Sandra Penger, PhD, and Assistant Professor Judita Peterlin, PhD, wish to thank our valuable guest lecturer for his fascinating lecture full of inspiration and demonstration of what dedication, intellect, hard work, passion for moving aviation to the next level and collaboration can produce.
