On 8 March 2018, members of the Society of Female Students of Business Sciences organised a roundtable at the Faculty of Economics entitled “A skirt amidst trousers” to help commemorate the international holiday, which symbolises the political and social equality of women as well as their achievements in different areas of social life.

The roundtable participants included guests with years of experience and successes in the business world and the broader public environment:

Alenka Bratušek, MSc, member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia and former Prime Minister of the RS,

Alenka Gorenčič, MSc, Director of Tax Consulting at Deloitte,

Nevenka Kržan, Director and partner of KPMG,

Dr Jožica Rejec, long-term former president of the Management Board of Domel, and

Melita Rozman Dacar, MSC, Director of Freight Transport, Slovenian Railways.

The attendees were first greeted by Petra Cirar, President of the Society, and Prof. Dr Metka Tekavčič, the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, who thanked the guests and others present for their response and wished them an interesting discussion, while also congratulating those present on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The Dean emphasised that the FELU is proud of the activities of the different student societies and their numerous initiatives and especially commended the Society of Female Students of Business Sciences and their desire to enable experience to be shared by older generations with younger ones.

With their extensive personal experience, the guests answered topical and interesting questions such as: how to reach the top positions in predominantly male environments and to work successfully in such positions; whether there are generational differences and approaches to solving problems in the business world as well as how important the support from male colleagues is in the business environment. In their answers, they touched upon the modern perception of the International Women’s Day and feminism.

The roundtable was hosted with wit by the Society’s founding member, Patricija Jukić, who talked with the guests about the beginning of their business career and encouraged them to share emotional and lovely stories about the inconveniences during the first steps of their business path as well as about the mistakes that were part of them becoming professionally mature. All guests emphasised the importance of hard work, perseverance, constant learning, consistent acting and appropriate interpersonal relations. They encouraged their younger colleagues to boldly proceed in their careers and shared the message that if they follow the abovementioned principles, they will have nothing to fear, as successes will flow. Even mistakes and painful stories will be part of their path, but the results stemming from hard work are worth the effort.

In the informal conversation after the event, the guests commended the activities of the Society of Female Students of Business Sciences and expressed their willingness to continue exchanging experience with the female students and the FELU as well as to participate in different FELU activities designed for students’ extracurricular education.
