In June, professor Mramor was invited to deliver lectures within the framework of »Distinguished Scholar« at Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), and in July to Sun Yat-sen university, Guangzhou (SYS) within a framework of monthly forum “A Strong Nation and An Innovative China” as the keynote speaker. Both universities are ranked among the top in China and also in the world – both also hold three global business accreditations (EQUIS, AACSB, AMBA), like FELU. In both cases the host was business school, at BIT their School of Economics and Management (SEM) and at SYS their Business School (BS). On both universities professor Mramor delivered two lectures, one public for students, professors and alumnae of the host, and also other universities, and one for the PhD students of a business school. The following topics were determined months ahead and professor Mramor followed clearly defined preferences of both universities closely:

BIT public:          Reshaping Corporate Governance of SOEs

BIT SEM PhD:     Capital Structure in CEE Transition Economies: Some Evidence from Slovenia

SYS public:          EU’s and China’s Economic Challenges from the EU’s Perspective

SYS BS PhD:        Capital Structure Decisions in Employee Governed Firms

All lectures were very intensive (approx. 2 hours each) with many questions, with excellent organization and communication plan, most even in the new or refurbished premises. Hosts went out of the way in kindness and support to make professor Mramor’s stay pleasant and efficiently used. Therefore, besides visits to the companies they organized a series of meetings with the management of business schools and universities on the topics of the quality of universities, especially on the »hot« topic of impact. They all showed big interest in Slovenia and its transition experiences with economic policy and institutional changes.

BIT SEM asked professor Mramor to join their International Strategic Board which he gladly accepted, supported unanimously by the management and senate of the FELU.

On both universities professor Mramor returned after a rather short time period (BIT after a year and SYS after four years). He was surprised to find how quickly study and research requirements are increasing, how enormous are investments of China in the best universities and schools of higher education and how, as a consequence, breathtaking the schools’ progress was in this short period of time.
