Summer school opening event with international evening

The Summer School of the Faculty of Economics, which traditionally takes place three weeks in July, is a qualitative and internationally renowned summer education programme for undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world. On Tuesday, 2 July 2018, this year’s summer school officially opened with the International evening event. Participants, over 400 of them, met with the professors and, on the first day, made friendships with each other and drafted plans for the next days.

Since the participants come from different parts of the world, the idea of the opening event is designed so that the participants of the summer school present the culture of their country and learn about the cultures of the other participants. The Faculty of Economics lobby was thus flooded with tables, each of which belonged to a particular country, where visitors could find various objects that best describe the presented culture. Some people brought food, then another beverage, and some thought that they would best present themselves with products that they are proud of as a nation.

When the tables were full and beautifully decorated, it was time for the acquaintance party to really start. The participants walked from table to table, tried different food and learned many new and interesting facts about other cultures, and were happy to present their own. They did not get to know each other only through traditional food and drink, but they were having fun with the rhythms of music until late in the evening. So, the ice was broken, and new friendships were formed.

From a conversation with participants from around the world, it was easy to see that they only decided for the summer school mainly due to new experiences. On the question of why they decided to attend summer school at the FELU, two friendly participants from Kazakhstan answered: “We decided for the summer school mainly to get to know Europe, new culture and people and gain new friends.” They hope that they will receive as much knowledge as possible and that even though they were here only one day, they liked Ljubljana very much and they were looking forward to exploring the city.

It was incredible to observe how the Summer School created an environment where all the participants were socializing and entertaining, and no prejudice, intolerance or ill will could be detected. We want all participants to enjoy themselves as much as possible during the summer school and return home with unforgettable experiences and incredible memories.
