The traditional Day of Business Informatics was very special this year because the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana (FELU) is celebrating 40 years of its Business Informatics programme. The main topic of the event and accompanying roundtable on 27 November 2018 was the key challenges and opportunities brought by IT. Prof. Dr. Andrej Kovačič and Prof. Dr. Janez Grad (FELU) presented the situation 40 years ago and the challenges they faced in that time when information technology was a whole new world and, as a result, computers cost a lot of money. The event was attended by many former and current students of the program and guests from companies and universities, including the President of Govorning Board at University of Ljubljana, prof. dr. Borut Božič

Prof. Dr. Tomaž Turk took us back to the beginnings of Business Informatics at the FELU and briefly outlined this programme’s history. If we look at the 1970s, we can see that in this period a minor specialisation on the management information system as a set of electives had already started. If we continue, we come to 1978, an important year due to the introduction of the first specialisation in Information Technology along with the first PhD programme. In 2005, in the line with Bologna Process, the Department established undergraduate specialisations and a master’s programme in Business Informatics. Despite many challenges over the years, today the FELU may be proud of the double degree programme and all the other achievements made in the area of Business Informatics.

Dr. Mojca Indihar Štemberger, Chair of the Department of Business Informatics and Logistics, best knows the current position of Business Informatics at the FELU. She described the knowledge they impart and the three areas that Business Informatics combines: management, information technology, and business operations. The Department emphasises project work where students acquire a high level of important competencies, such as teamwork, communication, strategic planning, and others. More added value is ensured by international professors and our own professors teaching abroad as well as the opportunities to help companies faced with different challenges.

The event finished with a roundtable hosted by Prof. Dr. Aleš Groznik. Our former students Tomaž Štolfa (co-founder of Layer), Tjaž Jelovčan (Microsoft), Ana Petrovska (Lek), Miha Valentinčič (Petrol), mag. Venčeslav Perko (ELES), mag. Teja Batagelj (Gen-I) and two former professors important for the establishment and development of Business Informatics Prof. Dr. Andrej Kovačič and Prof. Dr. Janez Grad (FELU) presented their views on IT-related challenges and the situation of Business Informatics in earlier years and today.

The Dean, Prof. Dr. Metka Tekavčič, thanked everybody at the Department of Business Informatics for having developed such a good programme that not only attracts domestic students, but also foreign ones from many different countries. Around 120 students enrol in the programme every year, with 30 to 40 of them coming from abroad.

Congratulations on the Department’s 40th anniversary to everyone who is or has been part of the Business Informatics programme. “Your hard work and effort have paid off! Well-deserved success, an occasion worth celebrating!”
