This last weekend the Faculty of Economics was teeming with life day and night. Every classroom was occupied with the participants of the 2019 Business Hive, buzzing with new ideas and approaches for how to provide the best solutions for the four provided challenges. The competition, which was  the ninth of its kind so far, started on Friday, 15 March, and lasted until Sunday evening. The participants were greeted by the Dean Dr Metka Tekavčič, who took the opportunity to announce that the Faculty of Economics has reached another milestone and will no longer be known as such but as the School of Economics and Business. The welcoming ceremony continued in the name of the latter with Neža Mlakar telling the story of how she founded La Popsi and how the product evolved to be the number one product of 2018 by ”Start it up, Slovenia”.

This year, the participants were presented with cases provided by UniCredit Bank Slovenia, Danfoss, Marand, and Lek. The Management Group team did an exceptional job with the overall organisation and especially with encouraging the company representatives to present some very demanding challenges. The whole event ran smoothly throughout the three days and ended with some very tired but nonetheless proud students. “Even though our team did not win, I have learned so much and am grateful for this experience and the opportunity to work on a real-life case of a successful company,” said one of the participants. All the participants truly did an amazing job and presented the company representatives with a wide variety of analyses, ideas and plans as well as prepared pitches that astounded the judges with their creativity and structure.

The 2019 Business Hive proved a wonderful experience for its 160 participants and ended with a twist which surprised even the organisers. The competition closed with not only four winners but five with UniCredit Bank Slovenia crowning two teams who in their opinion each deserved to win. Luka Ilić, the president of the Management Group who has done a brilliant job in leading the team, congratulated all of the contestants, thanked the Head Organizer Nika Ličen and celebrated how far the competition has evolved since he himself was just one of the participants a couple of years ago. This year’s organisation demonstrated that Business Hive is here to stay and will continue to give students a wonderful opportunity to apply their knowledge, skills, determination, and creativity. “Business Hive is like the Olympic Games – winning is not all that is important, being there is a win in itself,” concluded Dr Marko Pahor.
