Universities of Ljubljana and Bologna new partners in EIT Digital’s Summer Schools

The University of Ljubljana and the University of Bologna have both joined the network of EIT Digital Summer School organisers. With these two new locations, the EIT Digital Summer School will now offer 12 business and technology schools across Europe this summer. Learning how to turn technology into business is a key part of all the schools.

Ales Pustovrh, who is organising a EIT Digital Summer School on Digital Cities at the University of Ljubljana, is very pleased that his university is hosting a Summer School. “It feels so good to be part of the network of universities that provides excellent learning on new emerging technologies in a pressure-cooker environment, where both professionals and students learn how to make a business case in just two weeks. The University is very excited to be part of this.”

Giacomo Venezia, one of the coaches for the EIT Digital Summer School at Bologna University, is also glad his university can join the European Summer School organisers. “Bologna has a very long innovation history: we lie in the motor valley, in the packaging valley and in the food valley. So it feels very logical to bring this energy to the European ecosystem of universities.”

Each EIT Digital Summer School has its own topic to deepdive into. The Summer School in Lubljana, in Slovenia, specialises in Digital Cities. The programme is called Digital Transformation for Resilient Cities. Safe cities should be resilient to natural disasters like heavy weather, earthquakes, fires, or terrorist attacks. IT technologies, combined with existing disaster management strategies, allow for new ways of managing disasters in cities to be created, including post-event analysis.

The topic of the Summer School hosted by the University of Bologna, which takes place at the University Residential Center of the University of Bologna in a medieval castle, is Data Driven Manufacturing with Industry 4.0. “Participants will exploit a growing ecosystem with stakeholders in the direction Industry 4.0 innovation (I4.0), taking part in company site visits and immersing themselves in the Regione Emilia Romagna area,” says Venezia. The school will show the immense potential of using big data to monitor and automate I4.0 processes in the shop floor and to enable new after-sale added-value services. Finally, Venezia states proudly that Bologna also has “the oldest university of the occidental world”.

The mission of making Europe a leading player in the digital economy is one of the key reasons for EIT Digital and its partners to host twelve different Summer Schools in eleven European cities across the continent. The two-week EIT Digital Academy Summer Schools combine state-of-the-art excellence in key digital technologies with expertise in innovation and entrepreneurship (I&E). Professionals and students learn together how to turn new emerging technologies into businesses, by immersing themselves in real business case studies originating from EIT Digital’s partners.

The number of Summer Schools is growing every year and will even grow further next year, explains Roberto Prieto, head of the EIT Digital Academy. “Every year universities can submit a proposal to host an EIT Digital Summer School. The organisers will get funding if their programme has been approved. We also hope to see new universities volunteer to organise one of the Summer Schools through Europe2020, the programme in which universities and companies can submit new ideas for products, startups or education programmes.”

Description of past and future activities performed with EIT Digital

University of Ljubljana is a new partner of EIT Digital, a leading European digital innovation and entrepreneurial education organization driving Europe’s digital transformation. Its way of working embodies the future of innovation through a pan-European ecosystem of over 200 top European corporations, SMEs, startups, universities and research institutes, where students, researchers, engineers, business developers and entrepreneurs collaborate in an open innovation setting.

University of Ljubljana has joined the EIT Digital in 2019 and organized one of the twelve EIT Digital Summer Schools this year. The school focused on Driving Change through Digital Transformation, and the EIT Digital’s Digital Cities Action Line Leader supervised the programme.

The aim of the Ljubljana Summer School was to explore how new technologies are influencing the information, transportation and safety services provided by modern cities. All the teams developed during the summer school a clear description of their innovative idea and the problem they were supposed to solve and their vision of potential solutions.

In the 2020, the summer school will teach the participants how to analyse work processes and organisations and how to develop new working methods through an interactive design process using intrapreneurial and participative actions and experiments. The participants will visit the organisations and will interview different stakeholders.

Local contact details

The location of the Summer School is Ljubljana, Slovenia. A small city with a large university of 43.000 students is the perfect setting to allow the students to work on the cases provided by local companies and the city management. Listed as an undiscovered gem by the travel media, the beautiful landscape of Ljubljana, its laid-back summer feel and the proximity of the Adriatic and the Alps make for the best possible new venue for the EIT Digital’s Summer Schools in 2019. However, it’s growing reputation as an emerging startup hub and a crypto nation where more than 1 % of its population has invested into local initial coin offerings (ICO’s) also make it an intriguing destination to develop and deploy disruptive IT technologies in Digital Cities. You can get a better feeling of the host city here.

Student hostel is located 200 meters from the education venue and the city and its surroundings provide he perfect setting for summer social events. We plan to organize several, including a bootcamp for students when they start the summer school (a teambuilding event with clear focus on solving challenges connected to the business aspect of their cases). We will also likely visit one of the other cities in the vicinity of Ljubljana with similar problems but in a different institutional and legal environment (e.g. Zagreb).
