An opportunity for students to learn and practice the skills they need as European and global citizens
Three leading European universities (School of Economics and Business, University of Ljubljana, Goethe University, Frankfurt, and University Paris Dauphine) and the Alumni Programme of European Investment Bank Institute’s Summer School are launching the first European Ethics Bowl (EEB).
The European Ethics Bowl is created in order to raise awareness of the relevance and complexity of ethical issues in a European context and to enhance the capacity of students to discuss ethical issues in the working environment. The capacity to recognise and openly discuss ethical issues related to work, organisations, and business is becoming even more important nowadays, when Europe and the world are becoming more integrated.
In the EEB ethical issues are presented to the students in the form of specific case studies. Students will collaborate in small teams to solve the case and compete, first on an institutional level, and then across institutions. This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic the process will be adjusted and organized virtually: teams will present their views on the assigned ethical topics in a short video, and will be evaluated on their key messages, their responses to core questions and solving ethical issues in an accurate and analytical way.
To enable collegial dynamic and encourage students to engage in a dialogue and learn from each other in the competition on the inter-institutional level each group receives a video of another competing group in order to make a peer-review and pose questions to the other group on the day of the event. Afterwards the two groups meet in an online debate, accompanied by a moderator and judges. The team, who gets the highest number of points wins the competition.
This first European Ethics Bowl is limited to students from founding partner institutions but will be open to teams from all European universities as of 2021. Each year, the EEB will kick-off on Global Ethics Day (October 21st) and conclude on the UN International Anti-Corruption Day on December 9th.
Due to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year, the competition will be organized virtually by the founding members in Paris, Frankfurt, Luxembourg and Ljubljana.
