The roots of Alberto Luis Copello Cleger

On Tuesday, 7 March 2023, the SEB LU Gallery, like almost every first Tuesday of the month, took on a new look. The selection features the artist Alberto Luis Copello Cleger with his exhibition Roots, in which the main motif is the depiction of African-American portraits. With this exhibition, the artist aims to draw attention to the discrimination that has historically marked the past of African Americans.

Copello Cleger followed love and ended up in Slovenia, where he and his wife Nataša started a family. He no longer experiences strong discrimination here, having learned the language and assimilated well during his 20 years in Slovenia.

On a walk through the gallery, we meet a selection of people who have left an impression on the painter in one way or another. Some of them are responsible for his life, such as the portrait of his father, while others have influenced his children.

In his artistic work, Copello Cleger collaborates with other artists, such as Rajko Ferk, as well as with his wife Nataša, who has added her hand-crocheted products to the current exhibition. The paintings thus become a symbiosis of painterly strokes of acrylic, knits and other addition Copello Cleger always feels connected to God while creating, which is reflected in his Christian motifs. Through music – he usually listens to salsa or son – he receives inspiration that breathes new life into the portraits from his photographs when he transfers them to canvas.

The unfulfilled desire to become a painter, which had been burning in the artist since childhood, came to the surface, burst into flames and fuelled his life. He says he will paint and create for the rest of his life. Although he has no concrete plans for the future, he will follow his passion with trust in God and in life and further develop the talent that radiates from his works of art.

A peek into the exhibition and the artist’s story can also be seen in a short video made by members of the SEB LU together with the artist: Galerija Ekonomske fakultete, UL (marec, 2023) – Alberto Luis Copello Cleger “Korenine”. The exhibition, which recalls the roots of Copello Cleger, will adorn the SEB LU Gallery until the beginning of April 2023 and is definitely worth experiencing in person.
