Graduation ceremony of the joint master’s programme EMTM, Girona 2023

On Saturday, September 3, 2022, Girona, Spain, hosted the 15th ceremony of the joint master’s degree programme in Tourism Management (EMTM – European Master in Tourism Management).  The EMTM joint master’s programme is run by three universities: the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), the School of Economics and Business at the University of Ljubljana and the University of Girona (University of Girona). The ceremony was attended by the Head of the SEB LU Student Affairs Office Ms. Martina Sagir who give the following message to the graduates:

“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed professors, esteemed students, esteemed graduates and esteemed guests, I wish you all a good day.

On behalf of the Dean of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Ljubljana, Professor Dr. Tomaž Turk, and the Head of the SEBLU European Master in Tourism Management (EMTM) Programme, Professor Tanja Mihalič, who unfortunately cannot attend this meeting, it is my great honour and pleasure to welcome all of you, EMTM students and graduates, to this momentous occasion — the EMTM graduation ceremony 2021-23.

On behalf of SEBLU, I bring you the following message:

First and foremost, congratulations to each and every one of you, EMTM graduates. Today marks a significant milestone in your academic journey and SEBLU wishes you all the best in your future endeavours, both professional and personal. Your hard work, dedication and perseverance have brought you to this point and your potential is limitless.

However, today is not just about celebrating your individual achievements, it is also an opportunity to reflect on the unique situation we find ourselves in. As you are no doubt aware, we have recently seen the closure of the EMTM programme. This development forces us to recognise that tourism education as we know it is at a critical juncture. There is a very real risk that tourism programmes such as EMTM will be incorporated into broader business and management disciplines, potentially leading to their closure.

To preserve the identity of tourism education, we need to emphasise the importance of education based on professionalism and ethics in tourism. In addition, we must strive for solid support and recognition of tourism degrees and, equally important, of the tourism mindset. The value of these programmes goes beyond a simple diploma; it extends to the unique perspectives and principles taught to our graduates. EMTM believes that the future of tourism education lies in the fusion of humanism, universal citizenship, sustainability, technological innovation, the synergy of human and artificial intelligence, and tourism ethics. EMTM graduates are not only professionals but also ethical stewards ready to shape an ever-evolving tourism industry with purpose and vision.

In this regard, I would like to assure you that SEBLU and the Consortium are working tirelessly to ensure that the legacy and values of EMTM live on, and explore the posibilities to continue EMTM education.

It is you, our graduates, who represent the future of tourism. Your professionalism and ethical conduct, coupled with the collective influence of countless EMTM graduates, will leave an indelible mark on the development of tourism and its education of the 21st century. Your journey has just begun, but I am confident that you will complete it with poise, purpose and passion.

So as you enter this new chapter of your life, on behalf of SEBLU, I wish you boundless success and fulfilment in all your endeavours.
