Cosmotrips: The pulse of the universe in the Gallery of the SEB LU

On Tuesday, November 7, 2023, we gathered at the School of Economics and Business for the opening of an exhibition called “Kozmotripi”. The art exhibition is by the artist Radovan Gregorčič. An artist Jože Plečnik with the statement marked his works: “Form is energy.” The artist, who has coloured the Gallery of SEB LU for the third time, surprised us this time with works that are the result of his long development as an artist.

Highly transparent porcelain, as Gregorčič calls it, is the product of his visions, playfulness, and observation of natural materials in transformation. In the processing, it has been heated to as much as 1300 degrees Celsius, surviving only 20% of earthly materials. “What remains has been transformed. These are happy materials for me because they have shed their ballast. We all long for something more. In my imagination, even these materials long to be something more, meaning something is holding them back. They are all like poor souls at low temperatures, and I liberate them,” explains Gregorčič.

He grinds the transformed materials into a fine powder, later carefully combining selected substances that must be compatible, creating entirely new materials that do not exist in nature. By combining different mixtures, he ensures that materials bubble and create craters during firing, resulting in a new structure and colours not typically present in porcelain. The final product undergoes a cold, meditative treatment with a stonemason’s hammer. Hammer blows create prisms that produce the desired light effect.

Even though the exhibited works are exceptionally well-crafted, Gregorčič considers himself a beginner in the process, as he continues to explore and modify it. Together with his partner, Teja Hlačer, a ceramics designer whose product exhibition, “Vrtenje v življenje”, was on display in October 2023, they are developing a studio and course where they will mentor aspiring ceramics designers.

Glimpses of the cosmos, which have inspired Gregorčič since childhood, have been transferred into artistic works, with weights ranging from 6 to 12 – the Kozmotripi. They are available for viewing until the end of 2023.

We invite you to walk through the energies of cosmic fragments from the furnace of the artist Radovan Gregorčič.
