On Thursday morning, 7th of December 2023, EF researchers gathered in the Blue Hall of the School of Economics and Business, University of Ljubljana, to celebrate the achievements of the past year and receive awards for the best research articles. The research day of SEB LU was opened by the Dean of SEB LU Prof. Dr. Tomaž Turk with a reminder that one should internalize all one’s achievements and look forward to them despite the fast pace of life. For the first time as the vice-dean of SEB LU, Prof. Dr. Igor Lončarski first greeted the guests, then continued by emphasizing the progress and growth of the achievements of the Department of SEB LU, which we have witnessed in recent years.
At the center of the event was a very current topic – the use of artificial intelligence in research. Guest Prof. Dr. Niels Van Quaquebeke from Kühne Logistics University, Hamburg, Germany prepared the lecture AI Takes Our Jobs … to a New Level … and Beyond: The Now, New, & Next of AI in Research. Dr. Quaquebeke, a psychologist by training, addressed, explained and envisioned the use of AI in research areas. During the lecture, he walked through the topics where artificial intelligence can contribute to researchers, where there are pitfalls, what we will have to pay special attention to and, of course, what may await us in the future. Despite the exceptional efficiency and versatile use of AI, the role of the researcher is even more important. He will soon find himself in the role of responsible narrator, curator and guardian of data generated and obtained through and with the AI.
The lecture was followed by a conversation between Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vasja Rant and Dr. Quaquebeke, led by Assoc. Dr. Živa Kolbl. To the question with which she opened the debate, “Will humans become obsolete?” Dr. Quaquebeke answered with a short “yes”, in a way for sure. With this, in the conversation, they touched on the dark sides of AI, such as the weaknesses in the use and management of AI at the level of world politics, and the bias of artificial intelligence, which we can’t ignore, since it is based on human biased intelligence.
The event was concluded by the dean and vice-dean with the awarding of prizes, which was the main part of the event. The SEB LU award for the best scientific articles published in 2022 was awarded to the authors Prof. Dr. Robert Kaše, Prof. Dr. Jože Sambt and Prof. Dr. Vesna Žabkar.
SEB LU recognitions for the best scientific articles published in 2022 were awarded to the authors of Assoc. Prof. Damjana Kokol-Bukovšek, Assoc. Dr. Blaž Mojškerc, Assoc. Dr. Janez Dolšak, Prof. Dr. Nevenka Hrovatin, Prof. Dr. Jelena Zorić, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maja Zaman Groff, Prof. Dr. Peter Trkman and Prof. Dr. Matej Černe.
We congratulate everyone from the bottom of our hearts and wish them much academic success in the future.
