Ljubljana, 20 July; From 13 to 15 July 2015 the University of Ljubljana organised its first Summer School on cultural management. The Summer School is the fruit of the Art Council, which was founded by the University of Ljubljana (UL) last year. Organisation of the event was entrusted to the Faculty of Economics of the UL. The purpose of the Summer School is to present managerial tools in culture and to share UL member skills and knowledge with an emphasis on interdisciplinary work. The idea behind establishing the Art Council was to connect the various academies and faculties of the UL and to promote art both within and outside the University, so that it can better penetrate and participate in a diverse range of activities, including those in the business sector. The Summer School brought together the knowledge of the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Social Sciences with that of the art academies of the UL. The Summer School was attended by 41 students, most of them from the UL.

One-third of the programme was dedicated to academic topics related to cultural management, another third was given over to workshops and various events for the attendees, and another third focussed on knowledge transfer of cultural institutions at both the state and municipal levels. By means of practical examples and best practice, the organisers worked to outline the basics of cultural management.

The Summer School was linked to the first summer festival and the School of Old Music, which was organised from 9 to 15 July by the Academy of Music under the title Academia musicae antiquae labacensis. According to the Dean, Prof. Andrej Grafenauer, the work and content from both schools, together with the participants, were all successfully intertwined. The aim of the course on old music was to fill the gap in the teaching of string instruments and, to this end, the organisers invited Enrico Gatti, Professor of Baroque Violin.

As was emphasised by Prof. Ivan Svetlik, PhD, Rector of the UL, art can enrich both knowledge and experience in the sciences. He is convinced that the best results can only be achieved by connecting different disciplines, because the greatest advancements in science occur at just such junctures.
