School of Economics and Business, University of Ljubljana offers PhD course Causal Machine Learning, thought by Professor Michael Lechner, University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, on June, 12-16, 2023.

Course topic

This course presents new methods of causal inference and will be particularly interesting to those interested in econometric methods that estimate treatment effects and those who use the methods of machine learning. The aim of this course is to present the recent contributions to the literature and provide practical examples of use.

After reviewing basic identification strategies in econometrics as well as reviewing main ideas and methods of supervised (and some unsupervised machine learning), the main part of the lectures concerns causal machine learning, i.e., how to combine the prediction methods of the machine learning literature with the causal research designs to obtain reliable causal inference in empirical studies.

We will discuss on how to improve the estimation of effects commonly targeted by empirical papers, like the average treatment effect on the treated, as well as discuss new possibilities to uncover finer grained causal heterogeneity. The methodological focus is comprehensive approaches that allow to uncover all these causal parameters within a unified machine learning setting, e.g., double/debiased machine learning and random/causal forest-based approaches. Finally, we discuss on how to use the fine-grained heterogeneity to improve decision making. Some empirical examples used to show how these methods can be used in practice.”

Lecturer

Professor Michael Lechner is professor at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. His  fields of research are Machine Learning & Econometrics, Sports and Labor Economics.

The course is delivered in cooperation with the Bank of Slovenia.
