Success of Slovenian team on International Economics Olympiad 2023

From July 24 to August 2, the 6th International Economic Olympiad for high school students took place hybridly in Volos, Greece and online. 223 students from 47 countries and territories took part in the Olympiad. Slovenia was represented in Greece by Živa Cvitkovič, Špela Gačnik and Žiga Groff from Bežigrad Grammar School, Benjamin Gašperin from Kranj Grammar School and Jakob Grmek from Vipava Bishop’s Grammar School. At the Olympiad, the contestants competed in three tests: individual competitions in economics and financial literacy, and a group competition in the preparation of a business case study.
The success of the Slovenian team was extraordinary, it returned to Slovenia with 5 medals! Jakob Grmek won the gold medal, Špela Gačnik, Žiga Groff and Benjamin Gašperin won silver medals, and Živa Cvitkovič won the bronze medal. In addition to individual achievements, the Slovenian team took an excellent 6th place in the classification of all teams and an even better 3rd place in the total sum of points from financial literacy.
The team at the Olympics was led by Asst. Aleš Toman, PhD from the School of Economics and Business University of Ljubljana and prof. Tomaž Košir, PhD from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana. In addition to them, Tanja Istenič, PhD, Assoc. prof. Darija Aleksić, PhD, and Assoc. prof. Damjana Kokol Bukovšek, PhD (all from SEB LU) assisted with the preparation of the team.
Preparations for the competition and the participation of the Slovenian team in the competition in Greece were financially supported by the Public Scholarship, Development, Disability and Maintenance Fund of the Republic of Slovenia, the companies GEN-I, MAZARS, Generali Investments and Nova Ljubljanska banka, as well as the School of Economics and Business and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Ljubljana.
