New Beginnings and High Hopes: Freshmen reception at the SEB LU

On Friday, September 29, the SEB LU hallways and atrium once again came alive with the presence of students to celebrate the start of a new academic year. The focus of the day was undoubtedly the freshmen who crossed the threshold of this institution to begin their studies in economics. They were greeted by the dean, prof. dr. Tomaž Turk.

About a thousand young people, including many from different parts of the world, share a common feeling today: a mixture of anxiety and curiosity as they face this new and significant phase of their lives. “I finally have more freedom to organize my time and interests”, and “I just got an appointment to see an apartment. It’s weird, but exciting!” these are just some of the reactions of the new students, immersed in a sea of emotions and expectations.

Prof. Dr. Mojca Indihar Štemberger, the Vice-Dean for Student Affairs, in her introductory speech for the students of the English program, emphasised the importance of this new stage and reminded them that they are now part of a world rich in opportunities, but also in growing responsibilities.

After meeting their first-year professors, exploring the library hours, and talking with some of the older students, it was up to Matej Lino Pirc, president of the Student Council, to give a speech. Pirc stressed the need to focus not only on the academic side but also on culture, networking and — why not — fun. He presented the numerous activities and projects organized by the group “Povezani EF”.

The day continued with important information about the refreshed Student net, examination regulations, international exchanges and other important details. Indeed, from next Monday the serious work begins and there will be no more excuses.

In conclusion, the words of Prof. Dr. Mitja Kovač brought a touch of history and tradition: “Almost a thousand years ago, young people like you decided to found an institution that would provide them with a safe environment for education and free development. This torch has been passed from generation to generation, and now it is in your hands.”
