The Research Centre of the Faculty of Economics organized a research seminar on Thursday, 26th March 2015 at the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana.

Author: Darja Grošelj, Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford presented the article:

Rethinking the role of material access in digital inequalities”

“Over the past decade, research on digital divides has shifted to the study of differences in use of the Internet. As more people have gone online, actual material access to the Internet has been de-emphasised. I am going to argue that this shift is a result of a narrow conception of digital divides based on access through a PC at home. We can now see that this is a limited kind of access that no longer describes the way many people go online. One of the biggest changes in Internet use in recent years has been the growth of mobile devices that allow anywhere, anytime access. The uptake of mobile technologies and of multi-device Internet use calls for revisiting the role of technology in digital inequalities.

In the first part of the talk I will thus discuss patterns of adoption of new internet-enabled devices and factors that shape development of individuals’ Internet access infrastructures. I will then move on to discussing the impact of material access infrastructures on online engagement. I will present results of a mixed-methods study. The study combines quantitative analyses of five waves of the Oxford Internet Survey from 2005 to 2013, a data set representative of the population of the United Kingdom, and qualitative analysis of interview data gathered from 29 British Internet users.”
