Spin off company presentation by Institute of Physical Biology at IMB

On Monday the 10 December, the IMB class had the pleasure of being introduced to the exciting world of biotechnology and the dynamism of its future. We were introduced us to the constant evolution within the field and how solutions to problems, which are not traditionally linked to biotechnology, are being developed by the Institute of Physical Biology. The discovery of micro-organisms to prevent rust in metal bridges and personalised smoothies to correct nutritional imbalances in an individual are a few of the innovations we were exposed to.
Naturally, with this cutting edge technology, there is great potential for spin-off businesses to commercialise these new product innovations. It was explained that these products were created in response to an identified need, as opposed to other companies who search for problems to solve with existing technology. We were then familiarised with three spin-off products with high potential to be commercialised. One of these products was iDiagnostic. iDiagnostic was developed in response to the global increase in chronic diseases. Simply put, it improves the screening process for various diseases by accurately reporting on diseases an individual should have regular medical checkups for, and which are not a major concern. This product can have major impacts on national healthcare systems and mortality rates of countries.
We look forward to collaborating with the Institute of Physical Biolog as part of our Technology Specialisation in the final semester. This riveting presentation confirmed that if we combine the worlds of biotechnology and businesss, we can change the world!
