Mr. Luigi Cabrini, UNWTO, Director of the Sustainable Development of Tourism Department, was a guest lecturer at the EF’s Discussions about Tourism. The discussions started with an opening speech delivered by Marjan Hribar, MSc, Director General of the Directorate for Tourism at the Ministry of the Economy.
Mr. Hribar emphasised the growth of tourism in Slovenia and the importance of sustainable development for preserving the natural and social environments.
Mr. Cabrini warned about the dangers of climate change which will damage the most vulnerable tourist areas like the Alps and coastal regions. Tourism has an opportunity to adjust to these changes but it has to start now. He pointed out that tourism has to play a crucial role in dealing with climate change. We need to reduce our energy exploitation, to improve efficiency and use renewable sources of energy. There is a need for rapid action. However, Mr. Cabrini believes the CO2 emissions caused by tourism can be reduced in the long term, even though world tourism is expanding rapidly.
