On the 15th of January 2015, the Faculty of Economics, Ljubljana University (FELU), hosted a Conference, entitled ”Future of manufacturing & supply chain excellence“. The event addressed supply chain managers and the wider public, eager for knowledge. The conference was opened by two distinguished guests: Aleksander Zalaznik, Senior Vice President, Danfoss District Energy Controls and General Manger, Danfoss Trata d.o.o. and renowned futurist, Dr. Patrick Dixon, Founder & Chairman, Global Change, LTD.
The FELU Dean, Professor Metka Tekavčič, shared a welcoming address, saying: ”We are proud that we organized this event and that we have strong partners with our faculty. One of the key to success in general lies in supply chain management. This is an opportunity for colleagues to share experiences with our students. I am sure that we can expect through this conference brilliant ideas and new visions for the future“. Aleksander Zalaznik gave an overview of 20 years of tradition in his introductory speech: ”It was our passion to organize a supply chain 20 years ago. We are believers. The purpose of this conference is to raise awareness of how important an effective supply chain is for businesses and to turn to the future to give us inspiration for the next 20 years. Companies with the best supply chain will be the sustainable winners”.
As the first conference keynote speaker, Dr. Patrick Dixon, emphasized that benchmarking is very dangerous, as it means that we are in the middle of supply chain risk. “The whole world is connected together. Supply chain strategies are often overtaken by events. We need agility. Every sudden event is an opportunity and challenge. The future is about emotion.”, explained Dixon and added: “We are buying an emotion. Life is too short to be lost. The online world and offline become one.” As emphasized by Dixon, that kind of situation is very confusing for the companies, since Agility also needs simplicity. “11 % wage inflation in China means it costs more than in Slovenia. Slovenia also has significant cost advantages over Germany. Manufacturing in Mexico will grow for the US market. We waste 25 million miles a year driving empty trucks. The key is agile, dynamic leadership. The whole world is changing very fast. Supply chain will be an opportunity to make money in the future«.
