Nivea Kofol in the FELU Art Gallery: “The bond between a mother and a child”

On Tuesday, 9 January 2018, the Art Gallery of the Faculty of Economics opened an excellent exhibition of collected sculptures entitled “The bond between a mother and a child”. It shows the existential entity a human being faces at the start of their self-awareness. The sculptor Nivea Kofol also embraced this eternal theme with her own interpretations that are now on exhibit.

In western civilisations in human history, the cult of a mother was a symbol of fertility, the wife of the highest deity and at the same time the mother of the child of God. Among ancient civilisations, it was the Ancient Egyptians who developed this concept and gave it greatest prominence. Although nowadays the image of a mother and her child is frequently presented in a highly ethical, almost religious context, the original idea was used to awaken positive feelings, tenderness, emotions and social engagement.

This motive has often been employed by many modern fine artists, both Slovenian and international. According to the best fine-art experts, it achieved its peak in the Renaissance. Artists tend to express their understanding and views using specific materials, whereas the sculptor Kofol decided on a combination of wax, kiln-fired and glazed clay, stone and bronze.

She says the inspiration for her works arises in two different ways: “Sometimes, it’s a moment of spontaneity, other times it’s a transition from one motive to another that I am able to feel more intensely”. This collection was inspired by a certain stone near her home that she has walked past for many years. Even she was taken by surprise, although she sees this as yet further confirmation that sometimes the best things are there in front of your nose.

If you have yet to see the exhibition, you are warmly invited to come visit our gallery before the end of January.
