Emerald Publishing in partnership with EFMD – BSIS (Business School Impact System) carries out activities to bridge the links between business school research and practice in order to demonstrate the impact of research in the real world. For this purpose, they have launched a series of case studies with a real impact on society called Real Impact Cases. Among the “success stories with real impact”, the publisher’s Real Impact Cases series presents the findings of the research by:

  • Sara Dolničar, UQ Business School, The University of Queensland, Australia
  • Ljubica Knežević Cvelbar, SEB, University of Ljubljana
  • Bettina Grün, Department of Applied Statistics, Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria

published in the article “A Sharing-Based Approach to Enticing Tourists to Behave More Environmentally Friendly”.

For this article, the authors have already received the prestigious 2019 Charles R. Goeldner Article of Excellence Award.

The case study highlights the key finding of the project that pro-environmental reminders to tourists are not enough to encourage them to behave in an environmentally responsible manner. Accordingly, important behavioral shifts (especially in tourist environments) should either be encouraged or created by service providers, hotels, and tour operators in a way that tourists can accept as part of a wider travel package.

“Preaching to tourists about environmental sustainability during a time of holidays simply does not work” is a lesson that Emerald highlights in the presentation of this research on their website Real Impact Cases:

SEB LU obtained the BSIS certificate in 2018.
