On Tuesday, Nov. 4th, Konzorcij Mladinska Knjiga, hosted a book presentation, organized by the Faculty of Economics Ljubljana University (FELU) and its authors, Prof. Marc Epstein and prof. Adriana Rejc Buhovac. A book, titled Making Sustainability Work: Best Practices and Managing and Measuring Corporate Social, Environmental, and Economic Impacts, 2nd Ed. is geared how to implement sustainability into corporate systems.

Sustainability (concern for the environment, society, and economic development) is a growing concern on not only a global level, but on the corporate level as well. The need to not only keep up with demands, but also create a better social, economic, and environmental society is critical for a better future. A leading expert in the field of sustainability, Prof. Marc Epstein, is a professor of management (Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University in Houston, Texas) with an extensive background in innovation and sustainability and very much sought after in the world of corporate sustainability.

Entire attitude of the company has to support sustainability

Prof. Epstein keenly answered questions such as, why we should care about sustainability and why it is important for companies to not only integrate sustainability into their organizations, but also why the entire attitude of the company has to support sustainability. What makes Prof. Epstein’s work unique is that it details how to make these changes in large corporations, rather than simply listing the changes that need to be made. He addresses the reality of sustainability and need to make a more sustainable impact, giving an example of children working in third world countries in factories to produce goods for purchase in the west. “It is not ideal for children to be working, but there are limited possibilities for children who cannot go to school and have to work to help support their family. No one is in favor of child labor, but this is the reality of the social situation and corporations need to work towards a better social future”.

…students have to be a part of the solution

When asked what he wanted students to learn from Making Sustainability Work, Prof. Epstein stated, “For students, I think it’s that these are important issues, the issues are growing in importance, and that there are solutions available…students have to be a part of the solution. They need to be sensitive to this, they need to have an active role in solving these problems”. With dedicated professors such as Prof. Marc Epstein and Prof. Adriana Rejc Buhovac, our future is a bright and sustainable one that we can all look forward to.
