Nikolaj Nikiforov: “Together we are capable of great things”

On Wednesday, 17 November, Faculty of Economics (FELU), hosted the Russian Minister of Communications and Mass Media Nikolai Nikiforov. He believes that there is huge potential for co-operation between Slovenia and Russia and he also introduced the strategic plans for digitization of mass communication in Russia in the next year.

Vice dean, Tanja Mihalič, expressed her honour at hosting, the leader of the Slovene-Russian business world, and  he also emphasised the many years of tradition of good corporation between Slovenia and Russia.

The Russian minister, Nikolai Nikiforov, during his presentation, said that Slovenia is an important trading partner, according to measures based mostly on FDI. During the crisis and sanctions affected by the EU on Russia, the co-operation with Slovenia has played a main role.

Digitalization of mass communication in Russia

According to statistical data on internet usage, Russia takes first place in the world, as more than 54 million people have internet access in the country. Additionally, Minister Nikiforov also introduced his new project, which will start next year. The aim of this project is to build fibre-optic communications lines that will connect even small towns with populations upwards of 250 people, and to support Russian software producers. “The internet offers to every individual a unique opportunity for education and to broaden horizons”, he then added, that the strategic goals of this project were broadband connections and LTE in Russia.

Debate on prospective Slovene-Russian cooperation

Minister Nikiforov also encouraged Slovene start-ups to consider entering the Russian market. He concluded by saying “Slovenia is a very interesting country for Russia, not only because of own geographical position in Europe, but also due to of common history and culture.”
