On Tuesday, April 14, 2015, the Faculty of Economics was proud to play host to the famous American director, Michael Moore. Together with his film crew, Moore explored the Faculty and interacted with students for over 2 hours, even attending a macroeconomics class and participating in a debate during the class, imparting some of his wisdom on eager students.
Michael Moore is a controversial filmmaker whose most recent film, “Capitalism: A Love Story”, was met with a lot of backlash as it criticized the impact of corporations on Americans. This is not the first time Slovenia has been featured in one of his documentaries. Slovenia was also mentioned in his documentary titled, “Sicko” which was about the American health care system. Moore is in Slovenia documenting his latest topic of free higher education and wanted to interact with students benefiting from this system, as well as, experience the kind of education students are receiving from, what he believes, is a much better system. Moore even went so far as to state that capitalism is the problem with the American school system, because higher education is treated like a business, rather than a public good.
What was originally supposed to be a short visit was quickly extended when the students in the macroeconomics class, attended by Moore, began not only debating about the education system with each other, but with Moore himself, which quickly turned into over an hour of great participation on the part of the Faculty’s students, showing not only what a good education system Slovenia has, but also the kind of exceptionally intelligent and motivated students that the Faculty of Economics is producing. His goal is to show why a small country like Slovenia has a system so much better than the US. Moore concluded his visit with a round of selfies with the students of the class, who were all thrilled to have the opportunity to represent the Faculty and show exactly why FELU is one of the best faculties in Slovenia.
