On the 19th May 2015, the Faculty of Economics hosted the second information session on the International Full Time Master Programme in Business Administration – IMB . The IMB programme is an intensive master’s programme whose emphasis lies on teamwork, dedication and real-life case studies and discussions. The information session hosted by student manager Silva Pečarič, with the help of the programme’s director founder, prof. Janez Prašnikar.
The information session started with two students enrolled in the programme, Adnan and Nastja, sharing their experiences in the programme and continued with everyone introducing themselves. After a short introduction from every individual, the audience proved to be very versatile, as students came from various faculties, ranging from the Faculty of Economics, to the Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Engineering and other fields, showing the vast interest in the IMB programme.
After the introductions, prof. Janez Prašnikar said: “If this was the twenty third generation of the IMB programme, I would be very pleased”, showing his interest in the diversity of the students that are part of the programme. The student manager Silva Pečarič, before starting the informative part of the session, addressed the students with a message: “Now is the time to make your own movie for your own future.”
The following part of the session contained information about the structure of the programme, which is divided into several parts. In the first year of the programme, the students are expected to pass fifteen exams and participate in several projects connected to real cases. For example, in collaboration with one of the biggest chains of supermarkets “Mercator” and using their real data, students work on a project for six weeks that is presented to the management of the company. In this way, students are thrown into the real business environment, gaining valuable experience and learning from each other through teamwork.
Meeting the business and the people
Furthermore, students can choose between three specializations: finance, marketing and technology management. In addition, more than forty percent of the lecturers come from abroad, countries such as the USA, Finland, Ireland etc., giving students an opportunity to achieve an international mind set and perspective and an opportunity to hear stories from experienced and well-known individuals in the business world, such as the Vice President of Nokia, Sanderlin Carl Martin. There is also an excursion at the end of the first year where the students go to various countries such as Japan, Russia, USA and others, and during this time write articles about their experience which are then collected and a book is formed which is then presented at the Portorož Business Conference. If a person who has been accepted in the programme does not have an economic background, the programme also offers a free “boot camp” in the beginning of September with crash courses on macroeconomics, statistics and similar subjects, offering a solid foundation for students who have found themselves in this new environment.
Alumni activities
Apart from great academic opportunities, during the programme the students also attend various social events, which give them a great opportunity to build networks and connect. The Alumni MBA Radovljica association hosts the Alumni Cocktail Party where the students have an opportunity to present themselves to previous generations, make friends and find contacts. There is also a Gala Ball which is attended by all previous generations of the programme, once again giving an opportunity to students to connect and share experiences with the alumni of the programme.
During the session, great emphasis has been put on the intensity of the programme and hard work and dedication that has to be put in the students’ work. The programme is meant for ambitious students with clear goals and values, who are motivated, team players and willing to work. Nevertheless, the success of the programme is visible in the statistic that shows that 73% of the students find employment in the first three months after finishing the programme, some even working for companies such as Adidas and Google.
Prof. Janez Prašnikar described the experience as follows: ”It is like swimming to an island you can’t see. First you will start swimming hard, but somewhere in the middle of the way, where you still can’t see the island, you will think to yourself ‘Is it worth it?’. However, once you see the island, you will start swimming even harder.”
